Borno Governor’s convoy attacked in Maiduguri by thugs, many cars destroyed

Kashim_ShettimaKashim_Shettima The Borno State Governor, Kashim Shettima, on Sunday escaped what could have been a bloody attack on his convoy by suspected thugs in Maiduguri, the state capital.

Mr. Shettima was driving around the metropolis when suspected hoodlums waylaid and smashed some of the cars in his convoy.
Witnesses said the governor was attacked at a place popularly called Old UTC, which is located near the Peoples Democratic Party’s campaign office.

“The convoy of the governor came under attack at the Old UTC near the PDP campaign office which was burnt down during the All Progressives Congress presidential rally on Monday last week,” a witness, Samaila Sabo, said, “As usual when the governor is passing-by, most of us rushed to the roadside expecting that he might throw some money for us. But when we did that on Sunday, some boys in front of UTC began to run towards Kashim Ibrahim Way throwing stones and using clubs to smash vehicles in the convoy.”

“We had to rush back as security agents in the convoy began to shoot sporadically. I think they attacked the governor in retaliation for the burning of their office last week,” another witness at a local cap-washing shop said. The governor’s spokesperson, Isa Gusau, in a statement, accused the former governor, Ali Modu Sheriff, of being the mastermind of the attack on Mr. Shettima’s convoy. Mr. Gusau, who also said the state’s APC Chairman, Ali Dalori, witnessed the assault on Mr.

Shettima alleged that the attack was planned and endorsed by the former governor. “The governor was driving past Kashim Ibrahim Way after going round different hospitals in the state capital to offer support to patients when his convoy was attacked while returning to the Government House located at the G.R.A,” Mr. Gusau said.

“The thugs came out from a campaign office belonging to Sheriff and soon after the governor’s official vehicle passed, the thugs went after other vehicles in the convoy, smashing the windscreens. Don't waste money! Check best PRICES of phones, computers & electronics on www.PricePadi.com “The governor, however, ordered his security details not to use fire arms or any form of assault in order not to heighten tension in the state and compromise ongoing counter insurgency operations.

” Mr. Gusau said about 10 vehicles in the governor’s convoy were smashed by the thugs and called on Mr. Sherif to call the youth to order, warning that the APC-led government in the state would take every lawful steps to ensure that peace prevailed in the state. “Whether he likes it or not, his era has passed in Borno State. Nothing can change that history ‘Insha Allah’,” Mr. Gusau said.

“We call on the Federal Government to call SAS to order. If he is above the law, the FG should tell us but we will not be lawless and we will not allow him have his way.” But the Media Director to the PDP gubernatorial candidate, Inuwa Bwala, denied the allegation, saying the youth who attacked Mr. Shettima might be thugs owed money for the contract the APC gave them to attack PDP offices during Mr. Buhari’s visit to the state.

Mr. Bwala, who is also the spokesman to Mr. Sheriff, said nether he nor his principal was in Maiduguri when the alleged attack took place. He said, “We believe those who attacked Governor Shettima were the APC thugs that were denied payment of their contract agreement to destroy and burn down PDP offices in the state during General Mohammed Buhari’s visit on Monday.

“It was on record that during that APC rally where their presidential candidate visited Maiduguri and could not address his supporters, some APC thugs, despite the tight security, were personally led by Governor Shettima’s aides to burn down many PDP campaign offices including that of Senator Ali Modu Sheriff. “The same thugs used by the APC government were the ones who attacked him for failing to settle the contract for their act of political violence.

“What is happening in Borno State now is a reaction to the balance of terror. We, therefore, called on the security agencies to be up to their responsibilities to ensure that Governor Shettima and his people are called to order”.

Bomb threat: Bash Ali arraigned in court

Ex-international professional boxer, Mr. Bash Ali, was yesterday arraigned before an Abuja Magistrate Court over threats to bomb the headquarters of NEXIM Bank, located in Central Business District of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

According to the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), Ali’s prosecutor, the ex-international boxer is being tried for criminal trespass, obstruction in public way, wrongful restraint and criminal intimidation, contrary to Sections 79, 85, 348, 194, 266 and 397 of penal code.

Ali was arrested on Wednesday at about 2pm after one Mr. Bisong Peter of NEXIM Bank reported him at the Central Police Station. He was arrested alongside five others when he trespassed into the premises on the bank, using bus to block entrance into the building, thereby restricting staff from accessing their offices.

According to the prosecuting lawyer, Mr. Bulus Samuel, Ali threatened to bomb the bank, having come to its premises along with the others now facing prosecution.

In his submission, Samuel argued that the accused should be remanded in police custody while further investigation would be conducted to ascertain the true intents of their actions.

However, Lawyer to the accused, Mr. Agbonlahor Anthony, begged the court to grant them bail. He cited significant contributions Ali had made in nation building, stressing that since there was no official charge brought against the accused, it was only fair that they be granted bail.

In her ruling, Magistrate Hadiza Dodo, granted bail to Ali and other accused, but with stringent conditions. She ruled that each of them must provide one surety each who must be a top civil servant and must have a landed property in Abuja. She added that each accused person must pay N1 million to secure their bail.

The case was therefore adjourned till March 4, 2015 for hearing.

General Muhammadu Buhari, has declared that he respects Nigeria a lot,

The presidential candidate of the APC, General Muhammadu Buhari, has declared that he respects Nigeria a lot, hence he would publicly declare his assets publicly, if voted into power on March 28.

Buhari stated this in a document released in Abuja on Thursday. The document highlights what the respeced ex-General will do in his first 100 days as soon as he assumes power on May 29, 2015. He said he would encourage political appointees in his administration to also declare their assets publicly.

Buhari said, “I pledge to publicly declare my assets and liabilities, encourage all my appointees to publicity declare their assets and liabilities as a pre-condition for appointment.
“All political appointees will only earn the salaries and allowances determined by the RMFAC.”
If he keeps to his promise, he will be the second Nigerian president to publicly declare his assets.

The late President, Alhaji Umaru Yar’Adua, also from Katsina State as Buhari, was the first and the only Nigeria’s President to have publicly declared his assets when he assumed office.

This action forced his then deputy, who is now the President Goodluck Jonathan, to also make his assets declaration forms available to the public.

However, since he assumed office as the substantive President, Jonathan has refused to make the forms available to the public, saying that he did that when he was serving as deputy to Yar’Adua. When asked during a media chat whether he would consider declaring his assets publicity, President Jonathan refused, saying he did not give a damn.

But Buhari, in the document titled, “I pledge to Nigeria” also said that all his political appointees would only earn salaries and allowances as prescribed by the Revenue and Mobilisation and Fiscal Allocation Commission.

While pledging to personally lead the war against corruption in the country, Buhari also said that he would inaugurate the National Council on Procurement as stipulated in the Procurement Act.

He added that the Federal Executive Council, which he said had been turned to a weekly session of contract bazaar, would be made to concentrate on its principal function of policy making.

He said that he would also work with the National Assembly towards the immediate enactment of a Whistle Blower Act that will enable Nigerians to expose anyone who is stealing government money.

“I pledge, as Commander-in-Chief, to lead from the front and not behind in the comfort and security of Aso Rock, to boost the morale of fighting forces and the generality of all Nigerians,” he said.

Where is the Audit Report on Missing $20b? - Reps to Jonathan

The House of Reps has asked the federal government to make available to it the full forensic audit report on the alleged missing $20billion from Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).

The House of Reps’ action is a direct consequence of the exclusive demand made by LEADERSHIP, which had invoked the Freedom of Information Act, to compel the auditor-general of the federation (AuGF) to provide the media house with the full report of the forensic audit of the NNPC.

Rather than comply with this lawful demand, the AuGF Office directed LEADERSHIP to the presidency.
Consequently, the resolution of the House reads: “For the purposes of accountability and in compliance with the Freedom of Information Act, the federal government should, as a matter of urgency and in the interest of the general public, make the full report available to the Public Account Committee for the benefit of the House.”

House minority leader, Hon Femi Gbajabiamila, who moved the motion, expressed concern at the allegations by the former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria in 2013 that such a huge amount of money was missing from the NNPC, even as he lamented federal government’s inaction on the said report.
The motion noted that on April 2014, the Presidency had through the minister of finance, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, announced the engagement of a reputable international auditing firm, Price Waterhouse Coopers, to carry out a detained forensic audit on the accounts of NNPC.

Gbajabiamila lamented that since February 2, 2015, when the audit report was formally presented to President Goodluck Jonathan by the auditing firm, up until now neither the general public nor the National Assembly had been briefed in details on the contents of the report.

Another Poll Predicts Victory for Buhari, APC sweep in National Assembly Elections

by Malcolm Fabiyi & Adeleke Otunuga
Summary of Results: A comprehensive electoral survey was conducted from December 19th to February 7th. Respondents were sampled using Facebook and electronic mail. Survey Platform was Survey MonkeyTM. A detailed overview of the survey methodology is described at the end of this paper. The survey questionnaire comprised of 42 questions covering the following topics: (a) demographic questions covering gender, educational attainment, income, region of origin, place of domicile and location at which voter’s registration was done (b) 2011 electoral choices (c) 2015 voting intent (d) respondents’ political views and (e) motivating factors for the choice of Presidential candidate.

The survey completion period was intentionally delayed, and opened on December 19, 2014 after both major political parties – the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) had announced their Vice Presidential candidate selections. This was done to eliminate any potential bias that could result from the impact that uncertainties about the choice of Vice Presidential candidates would have on respondents’ choice of President.

A critical challenge that an online-based poll offers is the possibility that results can be skewed based on an over-representation of respondents from certain regions. We controlled for this by analyzing the results on a regional basis based on where respondents registered for their voter cards.

Given that the survey allowed us to establish where respondents would be voting, it was possible to develop a detailed profile of voting behavior by region. This allowed us to develop insights into the likely scenarios that will evolve by region, and also enabled us to ensure that a high response in certain parts of the country did not unduly skew the predicted outcomes. Our ability to evaluate voter behavior on a regional basis also allowed us to evaluate the potential impact that low voter turnout or outright vote cancellation in the North Eastern part of the country might have on electoral outcomes. All analyses relevant to the elections were carried out only with respondents that were domiciled in Nigeria and had also indicated that they would be voting in the 2015 elections.

Update: Policeman feared dead, 50 injured as explosions rock APC gov rally in Rivers

PORT HARCOURT—The governorship campaign rally of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Okrika Local Government Area of Rivers State was again disrupted, yesterday, as several explosions rocked the Okrika National Field venue of the event.

Meanwhile, Rivers State Police Command has confirmed that a policeman lost his life in the shooting at the venue of APC governorship rally in Okrika, while three others sustained gunshot injuries.

A statement by the Rivers State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Ahmed Muhammad also confirmed that a journalist with Channels television, Charles Eruka, was stabbed by suspected political thugs, who shot sporadically and detonated explosives at the venue of the rally.

The Police said it was the timely action of its men that saved the situation from further degenerating.

The governorship candidate of the party, Dr Dakuku Peterside, told Vanguard on phone that about 50 members of his party sustained injuries from the attack.

Meanwhile, Governor Rotimi Amaechi has condemned the incident. He also blamed the First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan for the attack on members and supporters of APC in Okrika.

Continuing, Peterside said a policeman and a journalist with Channels Television, Mr Charles Eruka, were also attacked by the suspected political thugs, noting that the journalist was allegedly stabbed.

He said: “We arrived my alma mater, Okrika Grammar School first, where I paid a courtesy visit on the principal. That was at 11a.m. From there we proceeded to pay a courtesy call on the traditional ruler of Ogoloma. Before we got to the venue of the rally, we heard that three explosives had been detonated at the school field. But things were normal when we arrived the venue. We started with praise and worship. Solidarity speeches were going on when suddenly shooting started.

“Fifty of our supporters were injured. A policeman was shot. The whereabout of some of our members is still unknown. A journalist with Channels Television, Mr Charles Eruka was stabbed.”

APC Reacts To Withdrawal Of Security Agents From Border

The country’s main opposition party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has reacted to the withdrawal of Customs, Immigration and other security personnel from the country’s border posts in Kebbi and Katsina States.

The party’s reaction was contained in a statement issued on Monday in Lagos by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, a copy obtained by Vanguard.

The party which wondered the purpose the directive was meant to serve lamented that the verbal directive led to the total withdrawal of the stated personnel from the border posts in the two states, leaving the posts unguarded.

APC in the statement asked who gave the order and for what purpose, demanding that the Federal Government should immediately explain to Nigerians what happened.

“It will not be enough for the government to tell Nigerians that it is not aware of such a development, because that will be more egregious than what happened in the first instance, and will amount to the government not being able to secure the country’s borders. It is also necessary to tell Nigerians how many states were affected by such orders. We were only made aware of two, but there is the possibility that the directive could have been more widespread,” APC said.

The opposition party pointed out that with no one left to guard the borders in the affected states for as long as the directive lasted anything could have happened.

“Who gave the verbal order? Was the order given verbally so that there will be no evidence of it? Were the Customs, Immigration and other security personnel ordered away to allow the free entry of contraband goods, election materials, weapons, terrorists or what? Even with our borders manned, Boko Haram terrorists have been marauding freely along the border areas. Will this illegal order not worsen the security situation, at a time the government is giving Nigerians the assurance that it will deal Boko Haram a mortal blow within six weeks?” the party queried.

The party said the development is coming a day after leaflets were allegedly distributed in Gombe telling people to stay away from polling booths on election days, raises more fears over the ongoing scheming by President Goodluck Jonathan-led administration and the PDP to make sure the rescheduled elections do not hold.

“In pursuit of this objective, these band of desperate people will do anything, including threatening the very existence of the country. Nigerians must not allow them,” APC said.

Meanwhile, the opposition party had earlier lambasted the Assistant Inspector General of police, Joseph Mbu, over his comment on February 12 about the forthcoming elections.

Recall that last week, the APC also raised alarm over the siege laid on the residence of its campaign spokesman, Shehu Garba.

APC Says Jonathan Doesn’t Know His Duties

President Goodluck Jonathan has been asked to clarify his duties as the commander-in-chief of the Nigerian armed forces since he has ceased to perform this role.

The All Progressives Congress campaign organisation in a statement signed by the campaign’s director for media and publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, said that Jonathan’s loss of control was quite evident in the media chat which the president hosted on Wednesday, February 11.

“President Jonathan claims that he had no idea about the plans to postpone the elections. Who then gave the command to the service chiefs to write the letter to Jega considering that the NSA’s line of reporting is directly and exclusively to the President? Did they write it without clearance from the commander in chief?” the statement in the Daily Times reads.

The statement further noted that the service chiefs, at the prompting of the national security adviser, made presentations to the Council of State.

“Who authorised them to make that presentation since the President claimed that he was not informed about the shift in the polls date, nay by extension the security issue that was raised by the security chiefs for the postponement of the polls?” Shehu’s statement asked.

“Is the President telling the nation that the top brass of the military can act without his consent? If that is the case, what then is his constitutional responsibility as commander in chief?”

This is just one of many thinly-veiled attacks that the All Progressive Congress have aimed at Jonathan. Late on Sunday, it was reported that the APC had alleged the presidency and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) were planning to create an interim government by pushing the election dates back.

Cultist Kills The Wrong Man in a Case of Mistaken Identity

Cultists have shot dead a 20-year-old student, Sharafadeen Ajao, at Oworonshoki, Lagos, in what is believed to be a case of mistaken identity.

According to a Punch report, Ajao only just graduated from secondary school last year and planned to sit for this the May/June West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examinations (WASSCE).

The deceased, also an apprentice tailor, was however killed by two masked gunmen who struck on a motorcycle around 8.30pm on Monday, 9th of February.

He was rushed to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, where he was declared dead.

A resident who witnessed the shooting, Mr. Akin Shehu, told Punch that Ajao was just a victim.

“I was also relaxing in front of my shop on that evening when the men rode by. When I heard the gunshots, I thought it was the sound of a firecracker,” Shehu said.

“Within two minutes, they had left, and we rushed to the shop and met Sharafadeen in a pool of blood. He was a devout muslim, and had just returned from the 8pm prayer when the assailants shot him.

Mr Shehu believes that the killers had targeted a different person whom he identified as Segun, an active ‘cultist and political thug’.
The deceased elder brother, Mr. Abdulrazak Ajao, also told Punch that the late student could not have been a cultist.

“He was learning fashion designing so that he would not be bored. His main focus was to sit for the WASSCE in May. His death is a shock to the whole family.”

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Kenneth Nwosu, confirmed the killing, adding that the deceased has been buried according to Islamic rites.

Nwosu added that the police are investigating the matter in order to apprehend the attackers.

I raped 7-year old girl because my wife bewitched me-Clearing Agent

A clearing and forwarding agent has been arrested by the police for allegedly defiling a seven-year-old girl, Deborah in Afromedia area of Okokomaiko, Lagos.

According to Crime Watch,The suspect, Uchenna aged 29, who is being detained at the Okoko police station, has blamed his wife for his woes. Uchenna and the victim’s parents live in the same house on Surulere Street, Afromedia.Uchenna, who hails from Abia State said:

If my wife has not kept the little girl under my care, the devil would not have pushed me to commit the dastardly act.

“My name is Uchenna, I am from Abia State, I am a clearing agent at Apapa Wharf. I woke up one morning, as I was about going to work, that was on January 28, 2015. My wife came in with the mother of the girl, the woman was telling my wife to help her look after the girl that she was going out. I told my wife that this is January, I don’t want trouble. I told her to send the girl back before I return from work.

When I returned, I still met my wife and the child. I asked her why she has not returned the girl to her parents? She said her mother was not yet back. After two days, I still saw the baby with my wife around 7pm, I sent my wife to buy something to cook and the little girl followed her, I thought that both would come back together, but only the child returned. I asked her who was pursuing her, because she ran into my room house and locked the door. I asked Deborah why she locked the door.

It was at that time I saw a woman pursuing her. I came out angrily and asked the woman what happened and she said Deborah stole her candies. I told her to come back and to inform my wife who brought her to my house. In the evening, my wife was preparing food outside, the child entered my room again. I asked my wife why she was still sending the child inside our house, my wife said she sent her to bring pepper and salt.

My wife was cooking outside, and I was watching television when the girl climbed me again and said she wanted to take her bath, I told her to call my wife, who refused to come. She came back again and climbed me. I started thinking about what was happening; it was as if somebody sent her after me. As she was on top of my body, I begged Deborah to climb down, but before I knew what was happening, I had started touching her.

“My wife was cooking outside, but when she entered the house, she told me that something really happened in this house, I confessed to her that something happened, but it was the devil that pushed me.

“I am suspecting that my wife bewitched me. How did she know that something transpired between me and the little girl?” Uchenna said.

The victim’s father Idris (other names withheld) told Crime Watch Today,

“My daughter was brutally defiled, according to the doctor’s report.

“My wife only begged Uchenna’s wife to assist her look after the kid. When my daughter returned home, she started complaining of abdominal pains. I went to a pharmacy store to buy drugs for her. After taking the drugs, the pains persisted.

“When Uchenna’s wife came and saw Deborah crying she became jittery and started telling my wife that something strange happened to my daughter when she left her under her husband’s care. So, it was then that I asked Deborah what happened and she told me that she was defiled by Uchenna. I was angry and we went for him, but he had fled. We traced him to Tin Can Island where he was arrested and handed over to the Okoko police station,”

Poor hygiene likely cause of hep A: expert

POOR hygiene in a Chinese factory likely led to the contamination of frozen berries linked to hepatitis A, an expert says.

EIGHT people, three in Victoria, three in Queensland and two in NSW, have been diagnosed with the potentially deadly virus after consuming imported produce from 1kg packs of Nanna's Frozen Mixed Berries.University of Melbourne food microbiology expert Dr Said Ajlouni says the product, which is packed and sealed in China, was probably contaminated as a result of poor hygiene and sanitation conditions.

"If there is a sick employee in the company who went to the toilet, came back without appropriate washing of hands, he could have transferred the virus easily to the produce," he told AAP on Monday.

"One single employee could cause the problem, because these viruses can be spread very easily."

Dr Ajlouni said it was possible, but less likely, that water or soil caused the contamination because viruses lay dormant until they reach a human or animal.

The suspect frozen berry product contains strawberries, raspberries and blackberries from China and blueberries from Chile.

Victorian health department senior medical advisor Dr Finn Romanes has also said contamination would have occurred overseas before importation.

Patties Foods, the Victoria-based distributor of the product, issued a nationwide consumer recall on Saturday and on Sunday, also recalling 300g and 500g packs of Creative Gourmet Mixed Berries as a precaution.

Hepatitis A is spread when traces of faecal matter containing the virus come in contact with hands, water or food and then enter a person's mouth.

FRSC partners TRACE on Sango-Ota traffic gridlocks

The Federal Road Safety Corps said on Sunday that it was collaborating with Ogun Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps to reduce gridlocks in Sango-Ota and its environs.

The Sango-Ota Unit Commander of the FRSC, Mr. Olonisaye Olufemi, disclosed this to the News Agency of Nigeria in Ota.

He noted that heavy traffic gridlocks were being experienced at the Toll-gate, Ojuore, Sango-Ota under bridge, especially on Sundays when worshippers going to Living Faith Church, Ota, drove against the traffic.

“The worshippers contributed immensely to gridlocks between 5.30am and 2pm by increasing vehicle movement to the areas,” Olufemi said.

On his part, the Zonal Commander of TRACE, Mr. Adekunle Ajibade, said it would deploy manpower to those troubled areas to assist FRSC staff to decongest traffic jams.

Ajibade said it would also bring a tow truck that would be used to clear obstruction by vehicles, especially commercial buses.

The zonal commander said commercial buses were adamant and parked indiscriminately on the roads without considering other road users.

“The collaboration between the two parties will reduce road crashes and the number of accident victims especially when articulated vehicles lost control and ran into other road users,” he said.

Nigeria faces critical six weeks to polling day

Nigerians had been due to elect a new president on Saturday until the electoral commission delayed the vote by six weeks, citing fears about security and the ongoing Boko Haram insurgency.

The country will now go to the polls for presidential and parliamentary elections on March 28, with gubernatorial and state house assembly polls two weeks later on April 11.

The delay has triggered widespread debate about what happens next, particularly if no significant progress is made in tackling the Islamist insurgency raging in the north and there is a further postponement.

Amid fears of widespread violence, the coming weeks are seen as among the most important since civilian rule was restored in 1999.

“The next six weeks are laden with difficult struggles to protect Nigeria’s hard-won democracy,” the International Crisis Group’s Nigeria researcher Nnamdi Obasi wrote.

Much of the discussion in the last week has centred on the Independent National Electoral Commission’s acceptance of advice from the country’s security chief and its impact on the political campaign.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) and its candidate Muhammadu Buhari were seen as mounting the first serious opposition challenge to President Goodluck Jonathan’s Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The result was even predicted to be close to call, with the prospect of the PDP being dumped out of power for the first time in 16 years.

Buhari, a former military ruler, called the election delay “a crude and fraudulent attempt to subvert the electoral process”, while the APC has alleged that the PDP used the military for political ends.

Jonathan’s campaign spokesman Femi Fani-Kayode described the APC as having “paranoid delusions” and “far-fetched and childish conspiracy theories” about the date shift.

The distribution of voter identity cards, which is not yet complete, and the ability to ensure security were “legitimate and genuine concerns” for a free, fair and credible election, the spokesman said.

Should elections go ahead on March 28, they would be within the timeframe under electoral laws that stipulate voting cannot be held later than 30 days before the handover of power.

Jonathan, whose term of office expires on April 30, has twice described the May 29 date for the transfer of power as “sacrosanct”.

But should he and his party not gain any advantage from the prolonged campaign and stall the APC’s momentum, the vote is likely to remain close — and could even lead to a re-run.

Legal action is a real possibility, particularly if the military is unable to secure and stabilise the restive northeast, allowing hundreds of thousands of displaced people to vote.

The APC has already said the integrity of the overall result would be in doubt if voters are disenfranchised in its stronghold in the violence-wracked northeast.

Court action could equally come from the PDP if there are further problems in issuing all voter cards to the 68.8 million registered electors or if there are claims from either side of voter fraud.

A key question will be whether any disputes can be resolved before the handover, particularly if there is a repeat of the deadly post-poll violence that killed some 1,000 people in 2011.

National security advisor Sambo Dasuki has said the vote will not be rescheduled again but many believe his six-week deadline to effectively crush Boko Haram is unrealistic.

“Despite the recent interventions by Chadian and Cameroonian forces, Boko Haram has proved its continued ability to disrupt,” wrote Obasi, noting that a wider regional force has yet to deploy.

A slight delay after March 28 would still fall within the 30-day limit before May 29.

But Lagos lawyer Festus Keyamo warned: “Any further postponement beyond the 30 days to the May 29 handover date will be a recourse to civil disobedience and unrest.”

Violence “may prompt the military to seize power and truncate the current democratic dispensation”, he added.

Political risk consultants Verisk Maplecroft said unrest could at worst inflame tensions between the largely Christian south and Muslim-majority north.

It warned of a “post-election crisis — similar to Cote d’Ivoire in 2010/2011 or Kenya in 2007/2008 — potentially even escalating as far as civil war”.

The APC and others have recalled the political turmoil after military ruler Ibrahim Babangida cancelled elections in June 1993, when the business tycoon Moshood Abiola was set to win.

But Nigeria’s Attorney General Mohammed Bello Adoke dismissed talk of a military “interim national government”, saying there was no provision in the constitution implemented in 1999.

Osun shuts two schools over students’ riots

Osun Deputy Governor, Mrs. Titi Laoye-Tomori, has ordered the closure of Government Technical College, Osogbo, and Osogbo High School, indefinitely over disturbances by the students.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that some students of Government Technical College, Osogbo and Osogbo High School embarked on a protest on Thursday.

This was contained in a statement by the Permanent Secretary, Osun State Ministry of Education, Mr Lawrence Oyeniran.

The statement said the closure was to curtail any further disturbances in the schools.

It advised parents and guardians to warn their children and wards to stay away from acts capable of causing public disturbance.

See what Pastor Adeboye Said When He saw His Name On A Coke Bottle

Having a customized coke bottle with one’s name written boldly on it is fast becoming a trend.
At first, it was the celebrities in Nigeria that got the first treat of the ‘share a coke’ experience.
Right now, the share a coke idea has traveled wide across Nigeria as a lot of names from all the tribes in the country in one way or the other have their places on the bottles of coke in every coke shop you enter.
This has made even non-coke drinkers to patronize the global brand all for the sake of wanting to feel among and also be socially significant. Perhaps, this can make us say that one of the most successful marketing strategy in Nigeria today is the ‘Share A Coke’ idea. Talking about the Share a coke idea and popular figures in Nigeria, the likes of actress, Toyin Aimakhu, Blogger, Linda Ikeji and a whole lot more have been treated to a special share A Coke experience.
Taking the ‘Share A Coke’ campaign further, the global brand has also extended its hands to the General Overseer of The Redeemed Church of God, Pastor, Enoch Adejare Adeboye. Pastor Adeboye took to his Facebook page to share the photo of the customized Coke bottle he received from Coca Cola.
He thanked the company but he did the unexpected. After thanking the company, he also added that he does not drink the product but rather prefers Chivita, Ice Tea, Lemon and Grand Malt!He shared the photo below and here is a screenshot of what he has to say about the Coke:Thank you COCA-COLA HBC for sending me my own personal bottle. Shame I don’t drink Coke. I drink Chivita, Icetea, Lemon and Grandmalt though #ShareAcokeNG, the man of God posted.

Tinubu Sends Message To Soldiers Parading His House

Just few days after the national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu cried out that his private residence is under uncalled surveillance by soldiers, a new update about the story is here!

Tinubu

Recall that Tinubu had accused President Jonathan of sending soldiers to survey his house along Bouillon Road in Ikoyi, an accusation which Tinubu says has been on for days before he spoke out. However there is a new dimension to the story.

According to Linda Ikeji, two new banners have be hung on the main gates of the APC chieftain and former governor of Lagos state. The inscription on the banners is hilarious it shows how creative our politicians can be when it comes to using words to tackle the opposing party. Although the banners were said to be put there by Tinubu’s supporters, an anonymous onlooker has this to say about it:

“This is the message we found on the fence of the APC National Leader, Bola Tinubu’s house this morning. The two banners hung in the fence of the main house and the next building to his house. The message was loud and clear to the military who have been patrolling Tinubu’s house and the stretch of Bouillon Road since last Sunday. The message on the banners meant for the military- “This is not Sambisa Forest. Wrong Posting.Sambisa Forest is the forest under the control of Boko Haram for years and is yet to be penetrated by the Nigerian military. It is suspected that APC stalwarts and Tinubu supporters must have put up the message over night.
Last night about a lorry load of soldiers drove back and forth on Bourdillon Road and round the Falomo Roundabout for about an hour before finally driving off

See one of the banners below as it was hung on the fence:

Hilarious, isn’t it?
Meanwhile, the former Lagos governor and currently the Jagaban of the Borgu Kingdom in the Northern Niger State of Nigeria has recently criticized the idea of postponement of elections.

12 killed, 150 injured in India train derailment

No fewer than 12 people were killed and 150 others injured in a train derailment in the southern Indian state of Karnataka on Friday, a senior police officer has said.

The officer said on condition of anonymity that the accident happened when nine coaches of an express train derailed near state capital Bengaluru in the morning.
He said the Bangalore City-Ernakulam Intercity Express was going from Bengaluru to the city of Kochi in the neighbouring state of Kerala when the incident took place.
“Twelve people have died, those injured have been admitted to nearby hospitals where the condition of some are said to be serious, while rescuers are trying to pull out those still trapped inside the mangled coaches,” he said.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has wished the injured a speedy recovery.
“Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu and officials are closely monitoring the situation and ensuring timely relief,” he said.
Meanwhile, Prabhu has said the accident happened as a boulder fell on the track and the train hit it.
“I am personally monitoring it and in touch with state and local administration,” he said.
The Indian Railways have also announced a compensation of 4,000 dollars to the families of each deceased and 1,000 dollars for those injured in the incident.
The state-owned Indian Railways, one of the world’s largest train networks, runs hundreds of trains daily, criss-crossing the country from north to south, with poor safety record.

Is there ever a good reason to kill? A new book by Chris Rhyss Edwards aims to answer that question

GEORGE Zimmerman was raised in a typical middle-class home and worked as an insurance fraud investigator.
Living in the confines of a gated community of 260 townhouses in Florida’s port city of Sanford, no one would have suspected he would be capable of murder.
Yet, one a rainy night in February 2012, police were dispatched to a confronting scene.
Trayvon Martin lay dead, face down on a patch of rain-and-blood-soaked grass as Zimmerman stood near the corpse.
The 17-year-old had been shot by a Kel-Tec pistol at point blank range and a single bullet ripped through his left lung before lodging in his heart.
Zimmerman made a kerbside confession to the attending officer.
He took responsibility for the slaying, but claimed he did so in self defence.
This is just one of the gruesome tales former soldier Chris Rhyss Edwards heard after spending five years researching and interviewing more than 250 people who have killed.

Why would someone chat to over 250 killers?
Chris Rhyss Edwards was a soldier, institutionalised to accept men and women die during times of war.
However, as a peace-loving man, Edwards struggled to accept how 500,000 humans could die every year from acts of intentional violence, infanticide, gang violence and state executions.
In order to try to understand the instinct to kill, Edwards went in search of answers by speaking with soldiers, euthanasia doctors, cannibals and gangsters who had taken a life.
“The common denominator in the majority of people who have killed is that they all had their reasons,” he told news.com.au.
“For some people it was killing to protect family, for others it was about honour and then there were the murders committed out of pure hatred.”
The 43-year-old explained he rarely felt intimidated when talking with the killers.
“Most of these people were just like you and me, the only difference is they have done an extraordinary thing,” he said.
“Some now regret their actions, but many did not.”
Edwards said the project started out pretty informally, but stared to gain momentum in 2010 when he took to Twitter with a direct question.
“I think I asked something along the lines ‘do we ever have a good reason to kill’ and I was flooded with responses,” he said.
“People started sending me messages about different forms of culturally or contextually accepted killing in other countries.
“I was truly astounded at what I was learning,” he said.
How does it feel to kill someone?
By using his social media contacts, Edwards was able to interview one of America’s most prolific killers, Charles Thomas O’Reilly.
Responsible for taking over 140 lives, you could be excused for thinking he was one of the world’s most infamous serial killers.
However, his kills are deemed legal in the eye of the law because they were planned executions taking place while he was warden in command of one of America’s most notorious jails.
“In the US, O’Reilly has become something of a pin-up boy for the millions of Americans who support capital punishment, even as global support for the death penalty wanes,” he said.
After speaking with the warden, Edwards discovered he didn’t regret a single death because he viewed killing as part of his job.
“You have the capacity to abduct, rape and murder a seven-year-old little girl ... I have no problem fulfilling my responsibilities,” the warden is quoted saying.

One of the more chilling interviews came when Edwards spoke at length with a former gang member in the US who had served time for executing a competing gang member to earn his stripes.
“He was young and had grown up in a really rough part of LA and had little option to survive than to choose a gang and have their protection,” he said.
After hearing how rough the gangster’s childhood was, Edwards was able to understand his actions were purely out of desperation.
“Gang members operate and make decisions under a different set of rules that are, for the most part, based on sheer survival,” he said.
“If they were seen to simply disrespect their gang by dating the wrong people, wearing the wrong colours, backing down in a fight or heaven forbid, taking the stand in court, they could be killed.
“His gang encouraged vicious behaviours in retaliation and revenge as a way to increase their reputation and to instil fear in others.”

Not everyone who kills is bad
In addition to those who have killed another human, Edwards looked at those who take their own lives.
“I had a fascinating conversation with Kevin Hines, who is one of a handful of people who have survived a suicide attempt off the Golden Gate Bridge,” he said.
“He suffers from mental illness and he jumped as a result of being unmedicated.
“He said as his hands came off the railing he decided he wanted to live so he flipped his body so his feet would hit the water first to break his fall, and though he broke his back, he survived.”
Another tale that sticks out to Edwards is that of a woman who sustained physical, mental and sexual violence for over a decade at the hands of her husband.
“One night he was especially violent and was beating her around the kitchen,” he said.
“She picked up a knife and swung at him, hitting him in the neck and he bled out before the ambulance arrived.
“Mothers amaze me with what they put up with in relationships and the lengths they will go to protect their families.”

After talking with over 250 killers, Edwards discovered that most were far from bad people,
“Child soldiers, gang members from rough upbringings, criminals and wives who killed their husbands because of sustained domestic violence, all did what they had to survive,” he said.
As for himself, the former soldier said his five year journey had been an eye opening experience.
“I didn’t realise what an isolated view of the world I had and what people are forced to do every single day on this planet simply to survive,” he said.
“They say you only know a man when you walk a mile in his shoes.
